Abstract

The paper starts from the Italian translation of International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). Preliminary consolidated edition (IFLA, 2007) – published in 2010 after the 2009 online publication on IFLA and ICCU websites – to examine principles and objectives of the new ISBD, together with the most relevant changes from the previous specialized ISBDs. The evolution of the international cataloguing theory and further changes announced for the first edition of the consolidated ISBD, which will be published in 2011, are also taken into account. The Italian translation team has greatly contributed to the revision; the Edizione consolidata preliminare makes an effort to produce an enlarged Italian terminology for standard cataloguing, which refers to the updated acquisitions of the international debate. This text illustrates the birth of the unified ISBD, its evolution, ISBD-FRBR relationships, and the resulting features of the first consolidated edition.
